Should I Work From Home Or In A Salon?

If you’re reading this then it’s most likely that you have completed your all-important training to become a nail technician, congrats!

Here comes the next big step of choosing where you will be working from.

Should you work from home or in a salon? Thanks to the pandemic, working from home has become the new norm, but for some of us nail techs, this isn’t something new.

There are several pros and cons to both working from home (and yourself) or working in a salon and it’s important to decide, ultimately, what’s best for you and what suits your lifestyle.

Grab a cuppa and get your thinking caps on, we’re going to run through them now, to help you make this decision.

Working from a salon

If you’re new to the nail world and have no existing client base, working in a salon can be a great way to gain exposure and build up your own clientele.

Opting to work from an established salon can be an easy way to get people booked in straight away, and you may also benefit from walk-in clients.

However, this is not a guarantee, so something to think about.

Either way, it’s a great way to start your journey, and could allow you to build up your own trusted clientele and community, who may follow you if you decide to part ways with your salon in the future.

Working with other technicians

When working in a nail salon, working with other nail technicians can come as an advantage to you as a brand-new tech, as they can teach you valuable things and show you new techniques, ones that you may not learn on a nail course.

Cost

Of course, nothing in life is free.

If you choose to work in a salon you will have to pay your way.

This could be in the form of a set monthly fee or a percentage of your earnings.

Having this extra expense in your monthly budget might not work for everyone just starting out, so it’s another thing to think about.

Freedom

Working for yourself and in your own space gives you the freedom to do literally anything you like.

You get to choose your own location, prices, décor and even music playlist (the most important thing obvs). You can literally call the shots from day one.

With all this info, we hope you can make the best decision for you. And don’t worry, it’s never too late to change your mind!

  1. I currently work in a salon with two other nail techs and it has been a great way to start out my career. it’s a little over 30min away, so i’ve been contemplating moving back home at the end of my lease! I think both are great options but i’d love to hear more about others experiences working from home.
